Most of my time, I spent with animals and in nature. For me it is so normal to know that they are very aware and intelligent. That they experience emotions, relationships and have their own ideas and longings in life. Since 2012 I am teaching humans to work with animals. To help them understand each other, connect and work things out. And I find that one of the biggest problems is that humans forget that they are animals themselves. And it amazes me how much pain and hurt is caused by the belief that animals are less sensitive or aware.

Horses, dogs, cats, “pets” but also wild animals are talking to us all the time. They see us struggling to find our place and a lot of times they are very forgiving about the cruelties and stupidities that we put them true. When we truly remember that these species are all part of the same life force, that we are not only connected to them, but also to each other and nature. We can start remembering the power we have to make a change for the better. To help not only animals but also the human animals around us to find healing and love in this life. And we will all feel less alone and lost, and start coming home. ❤️🙏

Dancer her story reached a lot of hearts. And this is such a beautiful thing, because horses that guard themselves or start attacking, are still mostly seen as difficult or mean beings. To be able to share their stories and their truthts with you means a lot to me. Especially because sharing may help other misunderstood horses as well.

I work as a behavioral specialist for over a decade now and I honestly have never met a horse that showed behaviors like that, that were ill intentioned. This is a sign that the horse is hurting, stressed or feels unsafe. And it is more a cry for help, than “being difficult”

There is no such. thing as “mare behavior” the horse “playing games” or horses that are just “lazy” underneath behavior always is a deeper need or story. And I have worked with hundreds of horses, and my experience is that they are extremiteit loyal and gentle beings that forgive a lot more than we know, and carry more burdens and pain than we can ever comprehend.

A part of working with behavior, is re -directing or soothing fight or flight behavior. And it is no good to surpress any expression. So you have to let it be. And be as safe as possible in the proces.

This beautiufull horse Dancer started attacking humans after big changes at the ranch where she lived. Now It is my job to find out, what is causing her pain, so she can start healing.

When horses are in a state of survival and unaniem to come out of it, there is something in the system still hurting or blocking the regulating forces inside. In this video I work with unwinding techniques for body, mind and soul. The first step is connection and trust.

And when the horse is ready, we start moving trough layers, like an onion. These layers are protective patterns. In this case the first one showed up as tension in the physical body.

In the previous session you can see Dancer changing from defensive behavior to trust, today you see the body… and in the next session… who knows?!

It's in horses' nature to avoid showing pain for as long as possible. Visible pain makes them visible to predators.

This is why many horses look perfectly fine on the outside and seem to behave quite normally. But when I examine their bodies or energy fields, I discover much more.

If your horse shows signs of discomfort, communicates with you about something by changing its behavior, take it seriously.

My heart breaks every time I hear the phrases "he's messing with me," "he just doesn't want to work," or "she's just a typical mare." Because all the horses I meet are willing to cooperate with us humans and do their very best for the people they live with. And If we are curious, educate ourselves and learn about horse behavior, we can help them heal and recover.

She started attacking humans. This beautiful mare, with a big presence. It started after a story of heartbreak and separation at the ranch.

Dancer had a wall around her, a wall of fire. It is something that happens when horses feel stressed/unsafe, caused by physical, mental, emotional discomfort or pain.

All horses in a herd co-regulate with each other, this also applies to their humans and places. Sometimes stronger horses in a herd co-regulate with beings that are in a vulnerable place and are not able to process burdens or pain themselves. Then te herd functions as one organism. But this is not always the case. Sometimes horses who are not balanced or more vulnerable themselves are in a way -not waterproof - to stress and emotions around them. Then their system gets in a downward spiral and their bodies and systems are activated in a fight/flight state.

It becomes like severe burned skin. By even thinking about being touched or influenced your body will start a process of fight flight.

I have known this horse since 2012. Her name is Dancer. She embodied the spirit of a lover, a dancer, truth and power.

During our first encounter she would guard herself. She signaled distrust and a clear "no" when we entered the valley with a halter in hand.

The next day I came without halter or rope. Knowing she would not hesitate to attack me, if she would felt any pressure. I stood in the field hundreds of meters from her. Opened my heart and communicated to her, I only wanted to help her to share her truth and release pain if she was willing to.

It helped a lot that I can honestly say,I have always loved her deeply. From a distance I could watch her during my first time in Sweden. She was the horse, that reminded me to be loving and kind - but take no shit. To see her like this, so hurt and not dancing or free was like watching a heart break in front of me. The truth of the story that she carried for some one else.

She walked over and laid her head on my shoulder, the starting signal for her healing journey.

It is of vital importance we learn about behavior to help horses heal. You can read more about Dancers healing proces in the next days!

🍁🍂fall is really happening… the rain, the colder temperatures, the early sunsets. And we are all adjusting to it for the first time. Especially Cherabi our partbred-arabian is a bit impressed by the nights. Even with 10 nets of Hay, she seemed to worry about the hay supply. It has something to do with her experiences in life that she became scared of not having enough, and now with the colder days it gets activated. But we are all finding spaces to heal. So yesterday I build something for them. A rack around the sides of their stable, with extra, extra and extra hay supply.

They also get a lot more minerals, vitamine and additional herbs. Because around these hights there are a lot of differences in plants and surroundings. And extra nice is that I got a lovely woolen 2 hand blanket as a present from my dutch horse friends. It goes all the way up to her ears, and she loves it!

The stable has a very good ventilation, meaning there are little spaces between the wood everywhere. That is very important now that the rain is here. But once the snow and ice come. It gets day, and I will put on some nice shields around the inside of the stable to close them. When tempratures will drop down to -10/ -20 the cold wind, is not invited inside anymore. 🌨️❄️

Step 1 - Start by deciding: there is nothing wrong with the horse.

Step 2 - Get curious! The bigger the “issue” the bigger “the underlying need is.

Step 3 - Find the pain that is hurting the horse. First start writing down the basic needs of every horse and check if every part is succesfully ✅ crossed of your list. Then tule out physical pain.

⚠️‼️90% of behavioral problems I see, are caused by underlying discomfort or pain‼️ horses are flight animals that are build to hide pain as long as possible to not stand out to preditors. This means you have to really dive deep in your investigation‼️⚠️

Step 4 - Help the horse! Horses don’t need to be fixed, but their lives do. Find what causes the old behavior and make changes. Then you can start helping the horse find a new road to travel. With different behavioral options and fullfilling outcome.

Have fun changing your ideas about horses and training, get ready to get unconfortable by finding the right questions to ask. And don’t forget who you are doing it for! Not the environment, but the horse🙏

Horses need a stable herd, to help them regulate, feel safe and alive. But how can we create spaces for them to flourish when we have combined herds, not enough land or nature and members that are unstable?

When I started my work as a behavioral exoert we were always trying to find ways to help people find group-homes for their horses. Important was the different ages and enough space. But there turned out to be bigger problems… herds are living with and roaming the landscapes and seasons, information and wisdom is traveling trough them and the social aspect that is of key importance for every horse.

But what if these horses are all taken away from their moms at a young age? If they never form a strong bound because members are constantly moving and what is the social language is really wonky?

A horse that did grow up with his family in a beautifull piece of nature came to me, because people kept telling his human her horse was dangerous and crazy.

After observing him, I found he was actually communicating very well, but the other horses did not respond to his light and subtle guestures. And by the time he had tried every signal and the horses would still walk trough his space (which was a lot of ha smaller that his hometown) he would result in bigger and stronger signals.

Belief me, nature will always find a way. And horses can live together in strange circumstances, with very different horses. But bigger groups, are not neccesarily better than a small group of horses.

It is the ability to harmonize , to co regulate, to create a sense of safety and vitality that benefits a horse.

And sometimes horses are better of with 1 or 2 good friends, that feel like home. Than a group with individuals who are not compatible, or are just to unstable to be able to help each other settle.

I have seen healthy horses turn sick of loneliness and stress in absence of friends, and I have also seen healthy horses turn sick and behaviorally disturbed in unstable herds. Take care of the unique needs of your horse ❤️ and get creative!
