In autumn we spoke for the first time. When her human asked me if she still wanted to continue through the winter. She let me know that it would be nice to see spring, the flowers, the Swedish may celebration and … something with running and jumping through the fields. (Later I learned that in may the baby sheep go outside for the first time.)

We talked about her body. Because energy moves beyond physical boundaries, but earthly life does not.

With a list of things to do and provide we would see how it went. Winter went well, but the rainy days were harder.Today we talked about her life. She told me about her son, the shared moments in nature, the partnership with her human. Mostly about love to be honest. The love she felt inside and around her and the first sunny days in spring.

Yes!! 🙌 Horses need to be curious! Use their nose, mouth, body 💪 this is a horse that after standing still perfectly started to look around and find something to do for himself.

Letting horses - especially young male horses use their mouth when they discover the world is very important in building confidence and a sense of autonomy ❤️🙏

The most problems we face with horses are simply a result of keeping natural flight animals in a life full of restrictions an challenges whithout the support or preperation they need.
So they have to find their own ways to cope… And sometimes it can get dangerous. Don’t you think it is our job to help and prepare them?

📣Ofcourse it is! Right now, so many horses and their environments suffer for no good reason.

That is why I am sharing their stories here and offer courses so you can start helping the misunderstood horses around you!

Recovery after abuse.

She got hit, kicked, had to have multiple foals that had been taken away. The scars on her body where a reflection of the once that cut deep into her soul.

Every interaction in her personal space triggered her. Sometimes she went into the “freeze” state with her eyes wide open and her breath stopped. Sometimes she clicked into the “fight” state and kicked immediatly. A response of a body in survival state, a spirit with parts of it locked up in the past.

There are 2 principals needed to help horses in this state.

1 safety first. For yourself and the horse.
The fight state is not a choice for horses like this. It is a primal reaction that literally kicks in without decision time for the mind. So make sure you are safe at all times. (When you are a proffesional you learn exactly how to handle yourself in situations like this)
2 Recovery and repair happen only after a sense of trust and predictability are introduced. You have to become so predictable, so safe and trust worthy in your actions that the horse can start making choices again.

Horses deserve our understanding and help. But to do that you need to know how! In my work as a behavioural therapist, trainer and trauma specialist I meet horses with problems every day. And the number 1 misunderstood signal is the shut down state.

When horses are reactive in the:
flight -> running and scared
or fight -> reactive, rearing, bucking, biting, kicking

You may not know what is going on exactly, but you can understand that the horse is not feeling good, healthy or safe.

The shut down state contains a spectrum of behaviour that is focused on inward expression. This can start at tuning out or blocking movement - up till learned helplessness to dissociating completely.

Causes can be: trauma, overwhelm, unmet needs, sickness and pain.

And what can you see on the outside? Just less and less of the spirit of the horse. In most areas of this spectrum horses will still function in a lot of ways. They might even follow all instructions, participate in riding and other activities.

To spot shut down you have to look for:

Curiosity
Play
Incentive
Connection with the environment

Sometimes it is play, love, grace, sometimes it is grief, shame or anger. But whatever comes, will make us feel more whole and restores the sense of belonging - a sense of home ❤️🙏

We love horses for their pure and wild spirits. Why do we “tame their spirit” and abuse them?

Most of us horse lovers will not recognise ourselves as -the dominant type who likes others to surrender to our will. But what the *#+~ is going on then in the horse world? Well ->

It is a historical subconscious pattern of patriachy, colonisation and suppresion showing up directly and indirectly in a cycle of abuse.

And that is why a lot of people ->including women are (un)willingly participating in taming the spirit of the horse.

The proces of appropriating land, plants, animals, each other and others went along side an inner rupture in the spirit and mind of all involved.

This caused a lot of forms of disconnection with our own nature and animalness -> creating the illusion of an animal kingdom and human category.

In many ways people were scared away from the primal, instictual and natural wisdom of life. Causing communities to live in a strange kind of illusion/matrix where we are taught to not:
speak our truths
show true emotions
Feel our animal side

Shamed for our naked bodies, bodily fluids, smell, movement and primal reactions we have domesticated ourselves and each other. And it helped us to feel socially and physically safe in the past.

The direct impact is visible in horses being for example - an animal you can buy (?!) the indirect impact is that we have subconsciously become scared of wild, primal, instictual beings.

It is one of the reasons why women - who have a history of being “tamed” controlled, mistreated and suffered from abuse and fear to be overpowered - are repeating the same patterns to the horses they love so much.

Somewhere in our subconscious memory we have learned that being your wild, primal, untamed self is a dangerous way to be. Not just for ourselves but for the horse too.

Now we have to become aware of the cycle of abuse… and break it. Willingly, motivated by love. It is a fight for the spirit of the horses, their welfare and will safe part of ourselves as well. ❤️ Men, women, they, them. We are animals!

Nobody needs to know”who is boss”. Nobody is allowed to hit or make others comply. And P.S. the horse is NOT yours.
